Dundalk

Named after a town in Ireland, Dundalk was explored by Captain John Smith during his Chesapeake expedition. Development of the area began in 1664, but the construction of the McShane Bell Foundry in 1856 gave the new town a new focus. The foundry was followed by the Bethlehem Steel Company, which purchased a huge plot of land to build housing for its shipyard workers. That housing became the core of downtown Dundalk, which was laid out in an orderly grid. The town has grown steadily since then, becoming a bustling suburb with many amenities for residents. Dundalk is convenient to Baltimore via public transportation and is home to a variety of schools, including a campus of the Community College of Baltimore County.
